Where’s the money? Ex-Mayor Tambut rapped for failure to remit GSIS contributions
Former Simunul, Tawi-Tawi Mayor Benzar Tambut has been charged before the Sandiganbayan for failing to remit the contributions of municipal employees to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
The Office of the Ombudsman filed 25 counts of violations of Republic Act (RA) 8291 or the GSIS Act of 1997 against Tambut after having found probable cause to indict him.
Investigation conducted by the Ombudsman discovered that from February 2006 to May 2010 the municipality failed to remit GSIS premiums amounting to P4,948,816.95.
During the period, it was found that there were 22 instances when the remittances failed to meet the 30-day allowable period and three instances when it completely failed to remit insurance premiums.
Under the law, the heads of offices and the personnel involved in the collection of premium contributions and other accounts due to the GSIS are liable when there is failure, refusal or delay in the remittance of such accounts within 30 days from the time that they are due and demandable.
