Wala namang ebidensya: Geronimo Treñas wants graft raps junked
Iloilo City Representative Geronimo Trenas has asked the Sandiganbayan 7th Division to dismiss the graft case over the alleged anomalous release of P500,000 to the Iloilo Press Club (IPC).
Trenas pointed out in his motion to dismiss that the Office of the Ombudsman failed to show he violated Republic Act 3019, the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
“Given the factual background of this case, there is no room for any reasonable man to think that accused Trenas is liable for violating Section 3(e) of RA 3019 considering that the evidence submitted by the (Ombudsman Field Investigation Office) during the preliminary investigation did not point to any circumstance showing manifest partiality, evident bad faith, or gross inexcusable negligence,” he said.
The Office of the Ombudsman filed the case before the Sandiganbayan after finding probable cause to indict him.
Under the cases, Trenas is accused of giving unwarranted benefit to the IPC when he gave the organization a total of P500,000 from 2003 to 2004 when he was still mayor.
The fund had been used to fund the IPC office.
The Ombudsman pointed out the funding shouldn’t have been done since the IPC is not among the non-government organizations accredited by the city government.
Because of this, the Ombudsman said Treñas violated the rules of the Commission on Audit (COA).
