Tubigan na ito! Iloilo megadam to increase rice production
The Iloilo provincial agricultural office (PAO) expects a better rice yield with the Jalaur River Multipurpose Project Phase II.
PAO chief Ildefonso Toledo said the dam may help address issues with irrigation system that is supposed to support crops during dry season.
“With all the technology and support,” the province can produce its affordable rice for the Ilonggos, he said.
He added the province must have optimum rice production to scrap rice importation.
Iloilo province accounts for 134,000 hectares of rice farm. Of these, 55,000 hectares are irrigated.
With the current irrigation system, Toledo said the province can only achieve five croppings in two years.
He said the steady supply of water from the mega-dam will be able to sustain continuous rice cropping.
Iloilo is the fifth top rice-producing province in the country.
JRMP II includes the construction of the 109-meter Jalaur High Dam, 38.5-meter Afterbay Dam, 10-meter Alibutan Catch Dam, 80.74-kilometer Highline Canal, and its appurtenant structures.
Korean ambassador to the Philippines Han-Dong Man said the groundbreaking ceremony of the project is tentatively set Feb. 8, depending on President Rodrigo Duterte’s schedule.
