Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas assured the city’s compliance with the Department of Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) memorandum that only personnel from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) are authorized to confiscate erring drivers’ licenses.

“In compliance with the directive of the DILG secretary that the traffic aides of the LGU are not authorized to confiscate driver’s licenses, the LGU of Iloilo City will refrain from doing so,” said Treñas.

The city mayor, on the other hand, said that he will work to have all traffic aides deputized by the LTO. (

Prior to the DILG order, in addition to issuing citation tickets, personnel from the city’s Transportation Management and Traffic Regulation Office (TMTRO) confiscated driver’s licenses of motorists caught violating traffic laws within the city.

Meanwhile, TMTRO chief Jeck Conlu stressed that just because TMTRO personnel are no longer authorized to confiscate driver’s licenses does not mean they will stop apprehending traffic violators.

He added that TMTRO personnel will continue to work and will apprehend violating motorists in accordance with traffic laws and local ordinances.

Those who are caught will still receive a citation, but their licenses will not be confiscated.
