Suicides in Iloilo up 20% last year
A total of 79 suicide cases were recorded in Iloilo province last year, data from the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) said.
This is 20 percent higher against 65 incidents registered in 2018.
Passi City, the only component city of the province, has the highest number of incidents with seven followed by the municipalities of Cabatuan, Leon, and Santa Barbara.
According to the IPPO, most victims were males 10 to 19 years old. Depression, family problems, nervous breakdown, and third party to a love affair are the leading causes of suicide fatalities. (https://bit.ly/2Ta8xDC)
To help prevent suicide, Police Colonel Roland Vilela, Iloilo police chief, said all police stations in the province launched awareness campaigns on suicide. Station chiefs were also directed to dig deeper into suicide cases.
The awareness campaign, however, was not enough, said Vilela as he called for a multi-sectoral approach to prevent suicide.
“We are doing our best but this may not be enough without the reinforcement from other sectors,” he added.
