The Bacolod City Legal Office has urged food establishments in the city to “strictly implement” City Ordinance No. 08-14-704, requiring them to serve half-cup rice orders.

The ordinance aims to reduce food waste in Bacolod, its author Councilor Bartolome Orola said in a Panay News article.

Orola added that rice, a major staple food in the Philippines, must not be wasted.

“Rice wastage is an increasing concern that needs to be addressed, not just in the city but in the whole Philippines,” according to him.

The politiko said the ordinance, which was passed in 2014, was a response to the “Be RICEponsible” campaign of the Department of Agriculture and the Philippine Rice Institute.
