Sandiganbayan suspends Iloilo mayor Centena over graft case
Calinog, Iloilo Mayor Alex Centena has been ordered suspended for 90 days without pay over the graft case he is facing concerning the alleged anomalous purchase of fertilizers in 2004.
The Sandiganbayan 7th Division imposed the suspension against Centena along with eight other town officials.
The anti-graft court pointed out that the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act makes it mandatory to suspend public officials.
“The presumption is that unless the accused are suspended, they may frustrate the prosecution of the case, commit further acts of malfeasance, or do both,” it ruled.
The Sandiganbayan already directed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to implement the suspension order
The case stemmed from the purchase of 666 bottles of fertilizers from Feshan Philippines Inc. worth P999,000.
Under the charges, it is alleged that the deal underwent direct contracting without complying with the procurement rules which required public bidding.
