Sandiganbayan junks Treñas’ motion to file demurrer
The Sandiganbayan 7th has turned down the motion of Iloilo City Representative Geronimo Treñas who sought leave to challenge the evidence presented against him over a graft case concerning the alleged anomalous construction of the Iloilo Press Club (IPC) building.
In its resolution, the anti-graft court disagreed with Treñas that the prosecution failed to show during the graft trial evidence which would prove his guilt.
The court pointed out the prosecution was able to present evidence enough to convict Treñas.
“Hence, there is a need for the accused to present his evidence because it is only in doing so that there can be a full appreciation and evaluation of the case,” it stressed.
Under the charges, Treñas, when he was still Iloilo City mayor, approved the construction using P500,000 from the pork barrel of Sen. Loren Legarda even though the IPC is not an accredited non-government organization of the city.
