Rodriguez scores in exempting Pia Wurtzbach from taxes
January 26, 2016

A Cagayan De Oro solon gunning for mayor in 2016 scored the deal to exempt Miss Universe PIa Wurtzbach from taxes.

During the House of Representatives ways and means committee hearing Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, Rep. Rufus Rodriguez moved for the approval of his bill seeking to exempt Wurtzbach from taxation.

Wurtzbach hails from Cagayan De Oro.

The committee raised no objections in approving the bill. It approved the bill for plenary debates and amendments on the day Wurtzbach is expected to arrive at the chamber to receive a medal of distinction.

“Since it’s a singular honor that a fellow Cagayanon won for the Philippines, I therefore move that we pass this House Bill 6367 provided for tax exemption,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez asked Bureau of Internal Revenue lawyer Nina Asuncion if Wurtzbach’s perks as the reigning queen are taxable.

Asuncion said it depends, and that these may be shouldered by the Miss Universe Organization.

Asked if Wurtzbach’s $300,000 gem-encrusted crown, Asuncion said it may be subject to a 20 percent final tax.

Wurtzbach has said she is wiling to pay her taxes on income she earns abroad, but she said the crown cannot be taxed because it was only loaned to her by the Miss Universe Organization.

The reigning queen also said the BIR cannot tax her for something she does not own. She said she would transfer the crown to the next Miss Universe after her reign.
