Para wala na daw aksidente! Trenas to install rumble strips in Iloilo roads
Incoming Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas has drawn up plans to prevent road mishaps such as the one that killed two public school teachers last June 15 along Benigno Aquino Avenue (Diversion Road) in the city’s Mandurriao district.
Treñas met with officials of the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) and Iloilo City District Engineering Office Monday to discuss the matter.
He instructed Iloilo City District Engineering Office head Rodney Gustilo to install rumble strips before and after the pedestrian lanes along the Diversion road
Rumble strips are a road safety feature to alert drivers of potential danger.
Also, Treñas said steel grills installed in the middle of Diversion Road will be extended all the way to SM City Iloilo.
Such steel grills will discourage pedestrians from crossing the very busy highway.
Earlier this month, public school teachers Joe Marie Osano, 45, principal of La Paz 2 Elementary School; and Alnie Dinah Osano, 36, of Ticud Elementary School in La Paz district were killed in a road mishap.
The two were crossing a pedestrian lane when a speeding Mazda sports car hit and dragged them.
Meanwhile, the PSTMO was told to deploy traffic aides who will guide people, especially early morning joggers, to use the underpass below the Iloilo Bridge.
Treñas said traffic aides should also be present at pedestrian lanes along Diversion Road to apprehend violators and ensure the safety of pedestrians.
On the other hand, Treñas is coordinating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority for the possible training of traffic aides.
He will also look into the revival of the intelligent transport system (ITS) that was initiated by former mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
