Nepotism in City Hall? Labella says he’s allowed to appoint seven family members
Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella clarified the issue on nepotism against him, saying his relatives are not given preferential treatment in the jobs at the City Hall.
This, after a Facebook page called Sugbu Republik accused Labella of prioritizing family members in the job vacancies at the City Hall.
The local chief executive noted that he was allowed to appoint seven family members but only appointed one. (https://www.philstar.com/the-freeman/cebu-news/2019/10/22/1962329/labella-nepotism-im-allowed-seven-i-just-hired-one#jkmc2Udyr0C18FY7.99)
He was referring to his brother John Labella whom he appointed as the secretary to the mayor, a coterminous position and primarily confidential.
“You can hire your wife, you can hire your brother, you can hire your son. Just like in the previous mga administration, basta primarily confidential. It’s not under the civil service, co-terminus na siya,” Labella explained.
The mayor also clarified that his other brother, Sinulog Foundation Director Jojo Labella, was hired by Vice Mayor Michael Rama because he is well versed in the Sinulog matters.
