Negros Occidental SP OKs P5M to buy palay
To mitigate the impact of the price downtrend, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Negros Occidental has approved a P5 million allocation for the purchase of palay from Negrense farmers.
The budget will be appropriated on the proposal of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist to procure crop harvest directly from the farmers, have it processed or milled, then sell it.
Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino said the provincial government will buy the palay from farmers at P15 per kilo. (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2019/September/14/businessnews1.htm)
The average farm gate price of palay is continuing to decrease from a range of P18 to P20 per kilo to P12 to P13 per kilo in the province, one of the country’s top rice producers.
Masculino said his office is now preparing the guidelines and will start with the procurement process after the publication of the ordinance in the local newspaper.
Eligible rice farmers are those who own land of one-hectare or below.
