Mental health units to be set up in Cebu City barangays
The Cebu City council has approved an ordinance that seeks to establish Barangay Behavioral Health Units (BBHU), a facility that will address mental health concerns among the residents.
The ordinance was authored by Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan Councilor Mary Ann Delos Santos, who is also the deputy mayor over health matters in Cebu City.
Nice councilors – mostly from the political party of Cebu City mayor Tommy Osmeña – voted in the affirmative, eight voted against, while one abstained.
With the approval of the ordinance, 80 barangays will soon have BBHUs. Baranggay health workers will undergo training for at least six months to handle mental health cases.
Each mental health unit will be composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, nurses and barangay health workers. Trained mental health volunteers will also be part of the unit.
