May kaso pa rin: Sandiganbayan junks Syjuco’s appeal to junk raps
The Sandiganbayan 5th Division turned down the appeal of Iloilo Representative Augusto Syjuco Jr. to dismiss the charges against him in connection with the 2000 misuses of his pork barrel fund.
The anti-graft court has issued a resolution which shot down his motion to dismiss the graft and malversation against him due to the delay caused by the Office of the Ombudsman in filing the case before the Sandiganbayan.
“The delay cannot be characterized as vexatious, capricious and oppressive,” read the court’s resolution.
“The length of time involved in the conduct of the investigation is reasonably necessary due to the complexities of the issues in these cases,” it explained.
The case stemmed from a Department of Agriculture (DA) poultry breeding and production project.
Under the charges, Syjuco is accused of entering into a P4.3-million contract way back in 2000 with his own non-government (NGO) Tagipusuon Foundation, Inc. to implement the project in his district.
The Ombudsman also discovered the NGO had no track record to implement the project and that the contract did not undergo the required public bidding.
