Negros Occidental 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Marañon III filed House Bill No. 330, unifying two Negros Island provinces into one region.

Negros Occidental currently belongs to Region 6, while Negros Oriental is under Region 7.

HB 330 proposes reuniting the Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental into a single region, with highly urbanized Bacolod and Dumaguete serving as regional centers. (

The measure is separate to the proposed Negros Island Region bill authored by Negros Occidental Third District Rep. Jose Francisco Benitez, which includes Siquijor island.

Marañon said he expects similar bills creating Negros Island Region to be consolidated during the committee hearing at the House of Representatives.

NIR was established in 2016 by an executive order issued by late President Benigno Aquino III, but it was abolished after Rodrigo Duterte took office.
