Actor now Ormoc Mayor Richard Gomez loves painting, and he reveals who first inspired him to pick up a brush on canvas.

The politiko’s yellow penis painting went viral on social media recently for all the wrong reasons, as netizens questioned his taste and finesse as an artist. Unknown to many, he’s been into the hobby for decades now, with a lot of his works being abstract renditions — not at all racy.

Apparently, his fellow actor Ian Veneracion was his first influence towards painting. Now, he turns to paints and canvases as a hobby and passion.

Manila Art – the last banner event of the Museum and Galleries Month (MGM) – is celebrating 11 years of Filipino artistry with the theme “Showcasing the Global Filipino Artist.” The art fair comeback will feature environmental commentary, diaspora of overseas Filipino workers (OFW), as well as mixed media collaboration from veteran and up and coming artists. Among the works exhibited are the painting of Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez entitled “Amazon Burning” which, according to the mayor, he drew following the huge forest fire that razed the Amazon jungle the past months. Gomez said that he was inspired to paint it after watching the live telecast of the updates about Amazon haze, saying that he felt sad that the forest is literally turning into ashes. His wife, Ormoc City 4th District Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez, said that the Ormoc mayor has passion for painting even before they were married. “He really loves to paint,” said the lady solon. “Before we were married, he painted one side of his wall in his home and now, he buys paintings that will interest him, whether it is painted by a well-known artist or not. Art have power over him.” Gomez, on the other hand, said that fellow actor Ian Veneracion influenced him to paint as a hobby. He said that most of his opuses were done on the floor or on the table, in a room at the back of their house, near the swimming pool, or in a garage whenever he was in Ormoc. The Manila Art 2019 runs until October 13 in SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier, Taguig City.
