Lapu mayor’s sister defends mask-free birthday party

The Lapu-Lapu City Epidemiological and Surveillance Unit sees “nothing wrong” with inviting around 50 people to Mary Chan Carungay’s birthday party last January 12.

Carungay, sister of Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, said she only invited members of her family, including her brother and his wife; her husband’s family; and officemates at the City Health Department, including members of the contact tracing team.

Minimum health protocols were observed, she said adding that the party was held in her house. (

The mayor’s sister explained that her colleagues at work are regularly swabbed and have tested negative for the coronavirus disease.

“Of course, we followed protocol during the party. But the photos were taken while some of us were eating, so, of course, we took off our face masks,” Carungay said in the vernacular.

Photos of the said gathering, which were posted on the Facebook page of Lapu-Lapu Untold Stories, drew flak from netizens.
