Lalagpas sa target date? Major WV infra project faces roadblocks
Roadblocks are hampering the early completion of a road project that would potentially link three provinces in Western Visayas, the Department of Public Works and Highways said.
Engr. Al Fruto, assistant regional director of DPWH 6, said work is ongoing on the Panay East-West Lateral Road project will connect Antique to central and northern Iloilo and Capiz.
But Fruto said some sections of the project, which is supposedly a five-year plan, need “improvement.” He did not elaborate.
He would only say there are sections with “many requirements.”
The DPWH is funding the 41-km road project traversing the mountains of Antique and Iloilo. The project would cost P2.6 billion.
Funding for the project has been going on for three years, including P760 million in 2017 to open the road along Bugasong-Valderrama road section in Antique and Lambunao-Inca road section in Iloilo.
In 2018, another P295 million was added.
Once the project is realized, the Panay East West Lateral Road will bisect Panay laterally or horizontally, Fruto said.
“Back in 1987, there was already a pre-feasibility study for the project. It’s a long awaited project,” he added.
Fruto said the road project will open the potential of the agri and eco-tourism areas and will benefit Antique, Iloilo and part of Capiz.
