Lacson to resume NIR talks soon

POLITIKO - The bible of Philippine Politics.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said that he would resume talks on the proposal to reestablish the Negros Island Region (NIR).
Lacson said he’s hoping that he would be able to talk with Negros Oriental Governor Carlo Jorge Joan Reyes at the soonest available time.
Before his assassination on March 4, then Governor Roel Degamo had expressed his opposition to the NIR creation. (

Degamo cited Negros Occidental’s “political dominance,” “unequal voting” within the Regional Development Council meetings, and the “cultural divide” in which people on the Occidental side of the island speak Hiligaynon while those on the Oriental side use Cebuano or Bisaya.
Degamo, however, did not completely oppose the plan to create another province.
The NIR bill has already passed the final reading in the House of Representatives and has been forwarded to the Senate.
