La Castellana identifies Kanlao volcano sitio as cultural tourism area
A sitio in an upland barangay in La Castellana town in Negros Occidental has been tapped as a model for cultural tourism in the province.
La Castellana Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan cited Sitio Old Fabrica in Barangay Cabagna-an, which is located at the foot of Kanlaon Volcano.
The sitio had hosted the recent 10th Ati-Fabricanus Festival.
Meanwhile, Mangilimutan enjoined other barangays to work for the promotion of cultural tourism in their area.
She said the locals should participate in developing the town’s tourism industry and should have knowledge of the culture and tradition of their respective sitios.
Also, she said one of the sustainable tourism activities of La Castellana in the sitio level is the annual Ati-Fabricanus Festival every January.
Barangay Cabagnaan Captain Arbie Sacapano said the festival was first celebrated in 2010.
Sacapano said the twist is that the festival features dancers are dressed in “ati” costumes and dance with giant figures called the “higantes.”
For 10 years, the Old Fabricanons’ desire to make this festival a success has been consistent, he said.
“The number of people witnessing our presentation is increasing every year, we are starting to be known as that of Bailes de Luces Festival of La Castellana,” he added.
