‘Kampiyon ng Media through and through’: Cebu rep Raul Del Mar dies, 79

Cebu 1st district Rep. Raul Del Mar passed away Monday (November 16). He was 79.

Del Mar’s death was confirmed by House Secretary General Jocelia Bighani Sipin in a message to reporters Tuesday (November 17). The cause of death has yet to be disclosed.

The Cebuano lawmaker is the sixth House member to die in the 18th Congress, after LPGMA party-list Rep. Rodolfo Albano, Camarines Sur Rep. Marissa Andaya, Senior Citizens party-list Rep. Francisco Datol Jr., Benguet Rep. Nestor Fongwan and Sorsogon Rep. Ditas Ramos.

Del Mar served as the congressional representative for nine terms, beginning with the 8th Congress in 1987. His daughter, Rachel, took over his post in the 15th Congress after he reached the three-term limit.

The Liberal Party, to which Del Mar belongs, mourned his passing in a tweet.

We honor Cong. del Mar’s life’s work as a dedicated public servant to the people of Cebu City’s North district, and especially as a staunch advocate for the rights, safety, and welfare of journalists – Kampeyon sa Medya through and through,” LP said.
