Kalibo bans use of plastic bags, styrofoam
The Sangguniang Bayan of Kalibo, Aklan has approved an ordinance regulating the use of plastic bags and polystyrene (styrofoam) containers during the Ati-Atihan Festival.
The world-renowned Ati-Atihan festival in Kalibo, Aklan will run for 18 days from January 2 to 20.
Kalibo councilor Cynthia Dela Cruz said in a Panay News article that the ordinance would encourage customers to bring in their own reusable bags.
Dela Cruz is the chairman of the Committee on Environment and Health.
“Plastic Bags used as primary packaging material for wrapping unpacked fresh foods and cooked foods at supermarkets, wet and dry markets, restaurants, canteens, and the like shall not be included under the scheme as the usage of such plastic bag is justified on the grounds of public hygiene,” the politiko added.
Consumers requesting for a reusable plastic bag will have to pay a fixed price of P5.
