Joe III to swim in polluted city waters?

Iloilo City Mayor Jose “Joe” Espinosa III said he plans to swim in the city’s waters, particularly in Arevalo district.

City hall employees are welcome to join in, added Espinosa.

But, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) does not encourage Espinosa to pursue his plan.

“It is not advisable to swim in those polluted waters. The level of coliform bacteria there had been high since 2005,” CENRO chief Engr. Noel Hechanova said as he cited data from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Hechanova said water quality test (physico-chemical survey) should be carried out.

Espinosa has announced that he would issue an executive order creating a task force to lead the massive cleanup of Iloilo City’s coasts.

He already directed the CENRO to enlist the help of environmental specialists, private stakeholders, and international agencies.
