Janette Garin set to win as Iloilo congresswoman
Former Health Secretary Janette Garin is poised for victory in the congressional race of Iloilo’s first district.
As of 9:25 a.m. Wednesday and from 99.45 percent of election returns, Garin garnered 120,805 votes while former Miag-ao town mayor Gerardo Flores got 27,646 votes.
Garin, wife of incumbent Rep. Oscar “Richard” Garin Jr., is currently facing a total of 38 complaints over the deaths of children injected with Dengvaxia, a vaccine against dengue.
In a resolution dated February 11, 2019, the Department of Justice said it found probable cause to indict the ex-secretary and several others for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide over the Dengvaxia controversy.
Garin, for her part, deplored the deplored the politicization of the Dengvaxia controversy.
“Let us put the primary importance to saving lives rather than politicking. It is only in the Philippines that has politicized the issue,” she said.
