Iloilo mayor tells colleagues: Observe prudence in using gov’t funds
Ajuy Mayor Jett Rojas of Iloilo province reminds his colleagues to always abide by audit laws when disbursing public funds.
“The auditors will not stop the transaction unless not compliant to laws. As much as possible, we do not want the (Commission on Audit) to suspend or disallow our expenses,” said Rojas in a Daily Guardian report.
State auditors met with Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and mayors from various municipalities at the Capitol recently.
All the purchases or expenses by the chief executives should be covered by an appropriations ordinance, according to the mayor.
Some town mayors lamented the practice of the government auditors in disallowing or suspending their spending of public funds even such disbursements were beneficial to people.
The COA, however, denied finding liabilities on the part of officials.
Public officials, they said, should disburse public funds in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government Code or the Government Auditing Code of the Philippines.
