The Iloilo Provincial Government has set aside P500,000 for the 50th Paraw Regatta Festival, the country’s oldest sailing competition.

The main sailing event today, March 19, is the festival’s highlight, with around 46 paraw racers and thousands of spectators expected.

“We are helping because it also affects us, like the Dinagyang Festival. We give assistance as much as we can,” Defensor Jr. said in the vernacular. (https://bit.ly/42os0BH)

The governor added that the provincial government also took part, with many fishermen from Leganes and Tigbauan joining the paraw race.

Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. executive director Joyce Clavecillas said this year’s festival aims to emphasize that the tradition of sailing continues despite the emergence of motorized or modernized bancas.

She added that the festival not only reflects the Ilonggos’ appreciation for local tradition but also celebrates the metropolis’ progress.
