Cebuanos were shocked when they learned that Governor Gwen Garcia is refusing to wear a face masks right in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

In what looks like a now-deleted Facebook comment, the politiko got sassy when a netizen inquired why she was not wearing any mask in her Facebook fan page, when everyone else around her donned one as protection. After all, Cebu is the Visayas hotspot for the outbreak.

Garcia insisted wearing masks brought her discomfort, arguing that keeping the carbon dioxide by her mouth will cause “overall exhaustion, lower my immune system and affect my brain.” She added that wearing a mask is a matter of choice, against the fact that it was Malacañang and the Inter-Agency Task Force that required its use when outdoors.

The coronavirus, meanwhile, could be silent but lethal especially to people her age.

Netizens were dismayed, saying she sets a dangerous example for their kababayans.

The mask we wear, be it surgical mask or N95 mask, is porous enough to allow the carbon dioxide we exhale to pass through, but not the droplets; or airborne microorganisms to pass through. We do NOT rebreath carbon dioxide, Gov Gwen Garcia and DJ Loonyong.

If it all boils down to choice, can I then say that being physically away from people makes me depressed and lowers my immune system, so I’m excused?
