Gov Defensor open to amendments in budget for 2019
Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. has agreed for budget amendments in the proposed 2019 provincial government budget to ensure its passage.
The Iloilo province is eyeing a P3.7-billion budget this year.
In a Panay News article, Defensor said the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s (SP) approval of the budget is important so as not to delay the implementation of the fourth tranche of the salary increase for over 2,000 regular capitol employees and the assistance for indigent residents.
“The Provincial Board can still save the day. It’s not too late for them to act on the 2019 budget fast,” said Defensor.
The proposed budget is pending before the Committee on Appropriations chaired by Liga ng mga Barangay provincial federation president Dorothy Paes.
Paes previously said she needed to study the budget proposal.
She noted that the 20-percent Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of the province amounting to P500 million was not itemized.
According to Defensor, the province’s IRA will be appropriated for barangay projects such as water systems, schools and day care centers, among others.
Under the Local Government Code, the SP has 90 days starting January 1 to approve the 2019 budget.
