Gov defends ban of tourists from coronavirus-affected countries
Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin defended his order banning entry to all tourists from countries with coronavirus infection.
He feared the spread of the SARS-like virus would adversely affect the province’s economy, said Gumarin.
“While the Bureau of Quarantine remains on high alert and is in constant coordination with authorities from all ports of entry for stricter border surveillance, the province of Guimaras likewise needs to have full vigilance and security in all its entry points,” read part of his Executive Order No. 15 issued last January 31. Gumarin said he was bothered by the confirmed report of the first case of the virus in the country, a 38-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan, the epicenter of coronavirus outbreak, now confined in a hospital in Manila.
He also cited the declaration of the World Health Organization of the 2019-nCoV outbreak as a “public-health emergency of international concern.”
