Ganzon, six city councilors accused of dereliction of duty

Former Iloilo city councilors Joshua Alim and Plaridel Nava filed an administrative complaint for dereliction of duty against Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon and six city councilors at the Office of the President.

The absence of Ganzon and Councilors Ely Estante, Lady Julie Grace Baronda, Jay Treñas, Leila Luntao, and Ma. Irene Ong during the regular session of Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) on April 23 jeopardized the general welfare, said Alim, an abogado.

On that day, the SP was supposed to discuss the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to declare a state of calamity in the city due to the effects of El Niño phenomenon.

The session, however did not push through due to lack of quorum.

“Under the Local Government Code, councilors have the obligation to attend sessions. If a councilor could not attend the session, he or she should first file for a leave of absence,” added Alim.

In an order dated July 4, the Office of the President directed the respondents to submit their verified answer within 15 days from receipt of the notice.

Alim and Nava, in their complaint, sought for dismissal from public service of the local officials.
