Ex-DOH chief Garin wants Dengvaxia vaccine back
Vaccination remains to be the most effective at protecting against dengue, said former Health Secretary Janette Garin.
Garin, now congresswoman of Iloilo’s 1st district, urged for the return of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in the market.
The vaccine can only be used in people with dengue or previously had dengue, she clarified.
“Dengvaxia should be made available in the local market again. If the government wouldn’t like it, fine. But make it available to private doctors,” according to her.
In February, the Food and Drug Administration permanently banned the sale and distribution of the first vaccine against dengue fever in the Philippines.
The government suspended the country’s dengue immunization program after Sanofi Pasteur admitted in November 2017 admitted that Dengvaxia poses higher risks to people who have not had dengue.
