Environmental group backs NegOcc plan to go ‘coal-free’
Pro-environment group Green Alert Network (GAN) expressed support for Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr.’s call to declare Negros Occidental a coal-free province.
“We said it then and we still say it now – No to Coal!” GAN said in a statement.
The group also encouraged Negrenses to be good stewards of the government and support the “No to Coal” in the province.
The Diocese of San Carlos earlier opposed the construction of a 300 MW coal-fired plant by SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. in San Carlos.
Coal causes air pollution and affects human health, said Bishop Gerardo Alminaza who was pushing for the development of renewable energy technologies.
In October, Marañon encouraged the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to pass an ordinance declaring the province a coal-free, clean-energy and environment-friendly province.
“We promise the people of Negros Occidental that the provincial government, its leaders, offices, and staff are and will be pursuing a no-to-any-coal-fired-power-plant-in-Negros-Occidental policy,” the politiko said.
