DOT eyes promotion of Samar as alternative tourism destination to Boracay
Samar as an alternative tourist destination for Boracay?
‘Why not?” said the Deparment of Tourism (DOT).
This after the Deparment of Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it will endorse the declaration of a state of calamity in Boracay.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier threatened to shut down Boracay to give it time for environmental rehabilitation.
DOT Undersecretary Kat De Castro said Samar is included in the department’s list of priority sites for promotion.
“Secretary Teo instructed me to look for alternative less known sites while rehabilitating Boracay. DOT will be more aggressive in promoting Samar and ensure that natural resources are well-taken care of,” De Castro said.
Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan said the move to promote Samar will boost the province’s economic growth.
“We are ready to welcome tourist after years of empowering, engaging and equipping our communities with skills needed to fortify the province’s community-based tourism initiatives,” Tan said.
