DENR, DILG, DOT recommend Boracay closure of up to 1 year
The Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Interior and Local Government, and Tourism recommended to close Boracay for up to one year for rehabilitation.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, and Interior officer-in-charge Eduardo Año, said their joint recommendation to President Rodrigo Duterte is a total closure of the world famous island.
“For public health, public interest, and general welfare, I recommend to the President the closure of Boracay island as tourist destination for a maximum of one year effective one month after the declaration,” Cimatu said.
Teo said a complete shutdown is needed so Boracay can be completely rehabilitated.
She also said the Philippines has other beaches and destinations tourists can visit during the closure.
Duterte earlier described Boracay as a “cesspool” because of its defective sewage system.
