Defensor says cholera vaccines not yet a priority
The Iloilo Provincial Capitol has no interest in purchasing cholera vaccines for now.
Three cases of cholera are not sufficient justification for purchasing, according to Governor Arthur Defensor Jr.
From January 1 to September 10, 2022, only three cases of cholera were reported by the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO); all three cases, one from Oton and two from Pavia, have since recovered. (https://bit.ly/3dVeocT)
Defensor said the provincial government will consult with the IPHO and the Department of Health (DOH) on the best course of action to take in the event that cholera vaccines become urgently necessary.
“There are other measures, the vaccine is not urgent if you have other measures to counter the disease, especially if the vaccines are expensive,” the governor said in mix of English and Hiligaynon.
The IPHO advised people to ensure the cleanliness of food and beverages being consumed, refrain from open defecation, and make sure water sources are secure in order to prevent cholera and acute gastroenteritis.
