Comelec denies petition to reject Negros Occidental mayoral bet’s COC
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has denied the petition seeking to cancel the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) of Negros Occidental mayoralty candidate Evello Muñez Valencia Jr. for lack of merit.
In a resolution, the Comelec ruled that Valencia, who ran for mayor of Toboso town in the last midterm polls, did not “commit material misrepresentation when he claimed under oath that he is a Filipino citizen and that he is qualified to run for public office.”
Presiding Commissioner Tito Guia, and Commissioners Socorro Inting and Antonio Kho Jr. signed the 8-page resolution dated May 10, 2019.
It may be recalled that a certain Toboso resident Ryan Bedonia claimed that Valencia is a US citizen “but stated in his COC that he is a Filipino citizen.”
Bedonia pointed out that Valencia travelled abroad several times using a US passport.
Valencia lost to incumbent Mayor Richard Jaojoco during the May 13 elections.
