Cebu LGU assures public of reliable blood supply

Cebu province now has a more “reliable” blood supply compared to previous years, Cebu Provincial Health Office Chief Dr. Rene Catan said.

In a recent medical mission organized by the Capitol, Catan said they collected at least 106 500-cc bags of blood coming from screened donors.

“(Presently), we are in much, much better on the situation of blood in the province, as compared to the previous years,” said Catan.

He said his office is mandated to meet the minimum critical requirement for Cebu province, such that at any time, they have 100 units of blood in the province.

In Cebu, there are four provincial hospitals that serve as blood stations. These include those in Balamban town and in Carcar, Bogo and Danao Cities.

These four blood stations have the capacity to store plasma that can also share their stocks to other district medical facilities, he said.

Also, Catan said the blood collecting units are going around the province to ensure ample supply.

In July 2017, Governor Hilario Davide III and the Philippine Red Cross inked a partnership agreement to build a blood center in a district hospital in south Cebu to address the increasing demand for blood, and to help supplement the country’s blood needs.
