Cebu barangay captains told to clean drainage canals during El Nino
With the El Nino phenomenon expected to cause a dry spell starting this month, barangay leaders in Cebu have been advised to clean drainage canals to prevent flooding.
In Mandaue City, Mayor Jonas Cortes issued the directive to barangay officials as he said this will mitigate flooding when the rains return.
He told an assembly of the Association of Barangay Captains that now is the “right time” for cleaning canals and drainage.
The mayor also ordered the City Development Council to monitor the city’s drainage canals, and have clogged canals cleaned.
Cortes also stressed the need to adopt a “no-plastic” policy, noting plastics are a major cause of clogging.
