Bong Go wants barangay elections moved from 2020 to 2022
CEBU CITY – Senator Bong Go is pushing for hi bill seeking to move the barangay election from 2020 to 2022
Go said he filed the bill to extend the term of incumbent barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials up to October of 2022, in order to give them time to do their jobs, which will redound to the benefit of their constituents.
“I filed the bill that will postpone the barangay election from May of 2020 to October 2022 in order to give the barangay officials a time to work for the welfare of their barangays,” he said in Cebuano during his visit to 350 families who are victims of three fire incidents in Lapu-Lapu City.
Go said if the election pushes through next year, the effect would be detrimental to the incumbent barangay officials, who would only be allowed to serve for two years, which the senator described as “too short a time.”
On Oct. 2, 2017, Republic Act 10952 postponed the Oct. 23, 2017 synchronized barangay and SK polls to the second Monday of May in 2018.
The law also states that the next barangay elections shall be held in May 2020, effectively reducing the terms of candidates who won the May 2018 elections to only two years, instead of the usual three years as mandated by the previous legislation.
“Two years is too short a time in serving a barangay because of their shortened term due to postponement which they cannot be faulted with,” Go said.
He stressed that the barangay officials cannot implement programs for their people if their term is so short, adding that subjecting them to another election affects the basic services intended for the residents.(PNA)
