Basyang moves Chinese New Year celeb in Iloilo: Nasira ang paghahanda
No thanks to Tropical Cyclone Basyang, residents in Iloilo may have to celebrate Chinese New Year nearly a week after everyone else.
The cyclone also caused the postponement of an event of the yearly Paraw Regatta.
According to the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Panay Chapter headed by Ramon Cua Locsin, the celebration scheduled on Feb. 16, Friday, has been moved to Feb. 20, Tuesday.
It and the city government headed by Mayor Jose Espinosa III agreed to postpone the celebration until the weather improves.
Chinese New Year activities lined up for this year include a food festival, fireworks display and a parade from Feb. 12 to 15.
Parts of Western Visayas, including Iloilo, had been placed under Signal No. 1 this week due to bad weather conditions brought by Basyang.
Meanwhile, the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation Inc. said the Slalom Competition slated for Feb. 14 was moved to Feb. 15.
The competition is held at the beach of Arevalo district and draws participants from other provinces in Western Visayas.
Paraw Regatta is the oldest traditional sailing event in Asia, and a boost to Iloilo’s tourism.
