Bacolod signs HIV/AIDS declaration
League of Cities of the Philippines national president and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia signed the Fast Track Cities Declaration which aims to intensify response to the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic.
By signing the declaration, Leonardia strengthened the cities’ commitment and continued partnership with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
This also makes Bacolod as the first city in Western Visayas to sign the declaration thereby leading the way for more cities to follow suit.
The UNAIDS-backed Fast Track Cities Initiative was launched in 2014 with Mayors from Paris, London, and Washington DC signing Declaration in Paris, France.
Also known as “Fast-Track Cities: Ending the AIDS Epidemic” to achieve the 90-90-90 target, it calls for localized, strategic, and accelerated efforts towards combatting HIV/AIDS.
As of April 2019, there have been 520 HIV diagnoses in Bacolod since 1984.
