Ayaw magaya sa Nazareno! Labella bans physical novena masses for Sto. Niño

Edgar Labella would not want to see a super spreader event in Cebu City in the middle of the pandemic.

After deciding to remove all live Sinulog performances, the Cebu City mayor has also canceled the conduct of physical novena masses running up to the feast of the Sto. Niño.

“Please be advised that there will no longer be face-to-face novena masses in the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu starting tomorrow until the Fiesta Señor on January 17, 2021,” the politilo said. “Their mass celebrations will continue ONLINE through their Facebook page, YouTube channel, and other media partners.”

It was a good move considering how badly the Manila City Government and the Quiapo Church were bashed for allowing as much as 400,000 devotees to gather for the Feast of the Black Nazarene last week.

“I commend this final decision from the Augustinian Friars and encourage all other parishes to follow their example. Let us continue to exercise our faith in deeds as we look out for each other’s health and safety in light of the ongoing fight against COVID-19,” he added.
