Argriculture dep’t promises P30M loan facility for six Negros Occidental towns
Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol has committed a P30-million loan facility for six towns in Negros Occidental.
Piñol recently visited the Ilog town in Negros Occidental where a Face-to-Face Forum of Biyaheng Bukid was held and farmers and fisherfolk got a chance to raise their concerns.
According to the DA Secretary, farm to market roads, irrigation services, machineries and tools, modern farming technology and easy access to credit were the issues that were brought up.
“The poor farmers told me that for every P1,000 that they borrow from community lenders, they pay back P1,000 plus an interest of three cavans of palay valued at about P3,000,” said Piñol.
He added that local grains traders buy the farmers’ produce at very low prices compared to the buying price in Luzon and Mindanao
“Responding to their appeal for help, I committed a P30-M lending facility for each of the six local government units’ farmers and fisher folks,” Piñol vowed.
According to the DA Secretary, the CHICKS region is composed of Candoni, Hinobaan, Ilog, Cauayan, Kabankalan and Sipalay.
“Before I left, I promised the people of Ilog and the CHICKS area that I will be back to check if the interventions provided by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries have changed their lives,” he said.
