Antique town offers free caskets for indigents
The local government of San Jose in Antique province is giving away free coffins to its poor residents.
Its mortuary project, which started in 2017, has so far provided 141 coffins to indigent residents.
Families who want to avail themselves of burial assistance should secure an Indigency Certificate from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office and present it to the caretaker of the local government’s mortuary in Barangay Marina.
Mayor Elmer Untaran said the local government has allocated P500,000 for the mortuary project this year.
The offer of free coffins lightens the financial burden of burying their deceased loved ones, according to Untaran.
Casket prices at funeral homes cost between P25,000 and P30,000.
