Anti-tambay measure! DOLE assists Negros students

At least 2,467 students in Negros Occidental have benefited from the government’s P22-million Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), the Department of Labor and Employment said.

DOLE Negros Occidental head Mary Agnes Capigon Capigon said the program gives the students a chance to use their semestral or summer break to be productive.

Interested participants should submit birth certificate, school card, and parents’ income tax return (ITR) of not more than P108,000 annually, to their respective Public Employment Service Offices.

Almost P8.4 million was allocated for the implementation of the program in the province this year, the DOLE said.

Under the law, SPES helps poor but deserving students pursue their education via employment during summer and Christmas vacations.

Employers who hire these students get incentives by paying only 60 percent of their wages, and 40 percent through education vouchers to be paid by the government.

The program covers students and drop-outs with intention to continue schooling, aged 15 to 25, and who are enrolled during the school year immediately preceding the summer vacation.
