The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is now studying a clustered sewage treatment plant for Boracay Island.
DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu made an ocular inspection of the STP at Barangay Balabag in Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan.
Aklan Governor Florencio Miraflores proposed the facility – which can cater to some 100 people in Boracay – to Cimatu
The proposed clustered Sewerage Treatment Plants for Boracay is a pilot project of the Guangdong Xindayu Environmental Technology Co. in the island.
Earlier, Cimatu sought a clustered STP for small hotels and resorts and households, after finding illegal pipes spewing out untreated wastewater to the beach area in May 2018. Larger hotels with 50 rooms and up should have their own STPs.
Last year, Boracay was closed to tourists for six months so it can undergo “environmental rehabilitation.”
Each clustered STP, built on a five-cubic-meter area, can serve up to 10 households with 10 people each.
But the STP shall be subject to water quality testing by the DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau.
