Aklan mayor assumes post despite dismissal
Malay Mayor Ciceron Cawaling of Aklan province has assumed office despite a Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) advisory directing the vice-mayor elect to assume the mayoral post.
“Kailangan magkaisa tayo. Sa dinamirami nang ating pinagdaanan, ang boses ng bayan pa rin ang mananaig,” said Cawaling.
Cawaling, who won his reelection bid in the last midterm polls, took his oath before Judge Bienvenido Barrios Jr. on June 6.
DILG Region 6 director Engineer Ariel Iglesia issued last June 27 an advisory directing Vice Mayor Frolibar Bautista to take over as mayor of Malay, which has jurisdiction over Boracay Island.
In April 2019, the Office of the Ombudsman ordered Cawaling dismissed after he returned to work from a six-month preventive suspension.
The Ombudsman found Cawaling guilty of grave misconduct, gross neglect of duty, conduct unbecoming of a public official, and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service that led to the sorry state of Boracay.
