Walang pinagagalitan! Duterte remembers Cardinal Vidal as person of peace

President Rodrigo Duterte only had kind words for Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal despite locking horns with the Catholic Church on certain issues.

Speaking at Vidal’s wake at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral Sunday (October 22), Duterte lauded Vidal as a “person of peace” who always spread the message of love.

“He did not, he wouldn’t even scold people, he wouldn’t do anything. I know this because I am from Cebu, from Danao,” the President said in Bisaya.

“The way he led the Church… In the years that he led the Church, you can never say anything bad about His Eminence,” he added.

Duterte said he flew to Cebu from the Masskara Festival in Bacolod because it was his obligation as a Catholic to pay his last respects to Vidal.

“Secondly, it’s important for me to be here as a Cebuano and as your President,” he said.

Vidal died on October 18 at the age of 86.

Duterte said he will sign an executive order declaring October 16, the date of Vidal’s burial, a holiday.
