Takot kami: Iloilo’s Catholic Church not comfortable with Espenido: Baka magaya sa Ozamiz
Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido may have the confidence of President Rodrigo Duterte as acting head of the Iloilo City police, but he may not enjoy such a privilege from the church there.
Msgr. Meliton Oso, the Jaro archdiocese’s social action director, said they fear the killings in Albuera last year and Ozamiz earlier this year may happen under Espenido.
Espenido was a member of the police force at the time Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa was killed; and was with the Ozamiz police at the time Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog was gunned down. Both mayors were killed in “anti-drug” raids.
“We Ilonggos are peace loving and we don’t want to happen to this beloved city and province of ours what happened in Albuera and what happened and Ozamiz City and we are asking our people to be very vigilant because we are against extra-judicial killings,” Oso said on Radyo Veritas.
“While we profess we want the drug problem to be truly and genuinely solved, but not through extra-judicial killing,” he added.
Oso also insisted Iloilo is not the “shabulized” area or a so-called “bedrock of shabu” as claimed by national officials.
He said they may come up with a statement telling Duterte that what he is saying about Iloilo being a drug-affected area “is not true.”
