Solon Treñas suspended over graft case
Iloilo City Representative. Geronimo Treñas has been suspended from office by the Sandigabayan 7th Division over a graft case he is facing for allegedly using government funds for the construction of the office of a media organization.
“Once the complaint is found to be sufficient in form and substance, the court can issue the suspension order,” read the court resolution.
With this, the court ordered Treñas suspended for 90 days and directed the office of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to implement it.
Under the case, when Treñas was still mayor, he allegedly released of P500,000 in public funds on December 2003 and January 2004 to the Iloilo Press Club (IPC).
The money was used in the construction of IPC’s office in Barangay San Pedro, Molo district.
However, the Office of the Ombudsman which filed the case said Treñas gave unwarranted benefits to the IPC, which is a non-government organization, and, thus, committed graft.
